Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
